Biological Control of White Grubs
LARVANEM is the perfect biological solution to control white grub problems in your lawn. Why choose LARVANEM?
Koppert Biological Systems has studied many different species of beneficial nematodes and selected Heterorhabditis bacteriophora as the most effective for controlling white grubs in lawns and gardens.
|
What is in LARVANEM?
LARVANEM™ contains the insect parasitic nematode Heterorhabditis bacteriophora , a natural enemy of the white grub of the European Chafer, Japanese beetle, May & June beetles, all of which can cause significant damage to lawns.
How does LARVANEM work?
When applied to turf the nematode enters the soil and searches for white grub larvae. Once the nematode finds a grub it enters it through any opening and begins the process of killing its enemy. The nematode species we use in our product is normally present in the soil but not normally in sufficient numbers to maintain control of the grub population.
How is LARVANEM formulated and packaged?
LARVANEM is formulated in a clay/gel carrier and depending on the size is packaged in a sealed tub or a cellophane bag. Each package contains 50 million bacteria and covers 2500 square feet.
Do I have to use the entire package at one time?
Yes, we recommend that all the product be used in one mixture.
How is LARVANEM applied?
LARVANEM can easily be applied with most sprayers or a simple watering can. All sprayer screens should be removed prior to spraying.
What is the best time to apply LARVANEM?
LARVANEM should be applied during the early morning or late evening when the intensity of sunlight is minimal. A cloudy or rainy day is also a good time for nematode application. Nematodes should not be applied to hot or dry soil. If the soil is hot or dry water thoroughly before applying the nematodes.
If using a sprayer how much carrier volume should be used?
Carrier volume should be 2 – 5 gallons of water per 1000 sq. ft. of treatment area.
Does LARVANEM need agitiation once it is in the spray tank?
We recommend the product should be agitated in some manner while it is in the tank. If in a small garden sprayer simply shaking the container gently every few minutes will suffice. If in a large spray tank a mixer or circulating pump will work well.
Are nematodes compatible with chemical pesticides?
Although nematodes can be applied together with some chemical products, they should not be combined with any of the common pesticides. For best results with nematodes, applications should be made 1 to 2 weeks before or after application of chemical pesticides.
When do I apply LARVANEM?
Although beneficial nematodes can be applied any time pest larvae are present and soil temperatures are above 12-14 degrees centigrade, late summer and early fall is the ideal time for application. The grub larvae are vulnerable as they are small, thin-skinned and near the surface feeding on grass roots.
In Western Canada this application takes place earlier due to the warmer climate. Application times run from mid to late July into August for best results.
Why does Koppert use the H. bacteriophora nematode in LARVANEM?
H. bacteriophora is the most effective nematode for grub control. It is a “cruiser” and searches through the soil for grubs to attack. Other types of nematodes are “ambushers” which simply stay in one place and are not active hunters.
Why does Koppert recommend that LARVANEM be used at high rates?
The use of nematodes for insect control has been well researched by scientists at major universities. The general scientific recommendation is to use 50 million nematodes for coverage of up to 2500 square feet.
Can LARVANEM be stored?
LARVANEM has a shelf life of 30 days under refrigerated conditions. If purchasing at a garden products retailer check the expiry date on the bottom of the package. On receipt the product should be stored in a standard refrigerator until used. Once the product is mixed it should all be used immediately. Fresh product always works best!
